Final Chapter in the Story of a Relationship

As the saying goes, “all good things come to an end”, and this is no exception. This post marks the end of this blog. We had some amazing times together and the past four years have definitely been the best years of our lives. Neither of us have any regrets; we had a great time together. We learnt a lot, we both travelled to countries we’ve never been to before (Ciera to Australia, and Daniel to the USA), and we had a lot of fun. It’s been such a great journey for the both of us, it was truly a Whole New World.

Unfortunately things didn’t end up working out in our relationship. We’ve had a few issues and certain things just weren’t working well, and as a result, we’ve decided to break up and each go our separate ways.

With the end of our relationship also comes the end of Ciera’s migration to Australia. Towards the end, her mental health became very unstable. As a result she moved back to the USA to live with her family and get the help she felt she needed.

We’re not 100% sure of the fate of this blog. Maybe we’ll keep it around for a bit since lots of people have found the articles on migration to Australia quite helpful. But don’t expect any new posts from us, as there’s no longer an “us”.

Even though we’re no longer together, we’re still friends and we’ll still try to answer any questions you have about migration to Australia!

For now, you can follow us on our separate blogs, or find us on Facebook. Feel free to stay in touch.

My trip to the USA

In June, it was time for Ciera to go back to the USA, as her working holiday visa was expiring. This was a pretty convenient time for me, as I was on my winter break from university which meant I could go with her. This was the first time I had been out of Australia so it was all pretty exciting.

Anaheim – Disneyland, Medieval Times

The first stop on this trip was in Anaheim California. During our time here, we stayed at the Carousel Inn. It was in a great location, right across the street from Disneyland and California Adventures. The hotel had a rooftop pool which was great at night when the fireworks in Disneyland were going off. You could also see all the key parts of both parks from there. Ciera’s friend Luci and her boyfriend Sterling were also in Anaheim at the same time as us. They were staying at a different hotel for a few days, but joined us and stayed at the same hotel as us a little later on the trip, on the days we visited the Disney parks. […]

Visa granted, flight booked! :D

I’m so excited! Yesterday, Ciera woke up to find that she had an email from our case officer. She opened it, and… It was a visa grant letter! She forwarded it to me, and when I woke up I was SO EXCITED for her! She’s now officially an Australian resident (well, once she arrives here anyways). Tomorrow is our three-year anniversary, and this is quite possibly the best anniversary present we could have gotten. I’m ecstatic :)

After being extremely overwhelmed with happiness and calming down a little bit, we booked her flight back to Australia. It ended up being pretty expensive since it’s coming up to summer here, but we did manage to get a flight with Air New Zealand again (since they’re awesome). She’s staying with her family for Christmas, and getting here on New Years Day. Having my girlfriend with me to start the new year is the best New Year’s present EVER! I hope these next 57 days pass quickly, I really can’t wait until I see her again!

No more waiting and wondering when things will happen. Now we have solid plans, and our life plans feel a whole lot more real. I’m quite possibly happier than I have ever been before! In 57 days, our long-distance relationship will no longer be long-distance. I’m counting down the days. 😀

Things are amazing right now. I just finished my last university class ever, and all I’ve got left are exams. Then I start working again, and Ciera gets here shortly afterwards.

I love life.

Until next time,
— Daniel

Applying for the Australian Partner visa

We’ve been asked by others going through the USA – Australia move to give details about applying for the Australian Partner Visa. This post is basically an overview of all the main parts of the application process. You will be able to find more information in the Partner Migration Booklet 1. Eventually we’ll write a post on our experiences, but for now, this post is just about the process itself.

While we were in the USA, we applied for the Offshore Partner Temporary Visa (Subclass 309). The visa is valid for two years, and if the relationship is still standing after these two years, a Partner Permanent Visa (Subclass 100) is granted. The one application covers both visas. While the visa application process isn’t very difficult, it does involve a lot of work and time. In our case, we applied in a de-facto relationship, although it’s a very similar application process if you’re applying as a married couple. […]

Week 29 – Preparing for the holiday

Ciera, Daniel and Louie!

This week has been awesome. Mainly because I’ve been so excited about the holiday Ciera and I will be going on!! I’ve never been outside of Victoria, so this will be quite an experience for me. We’ve been preparing stuff and booking things that we’ll be doing.

Monday wasn’t too amazing for us. I worked, and Ciera did… something. She can’t remember what she did on Monday. It was probably something so incredible that even she can’t remember it. Wow, that’s very awesome!! Erm… yeah… Anyways. Tuesday, Ciera needed to purchase a few things, so she went to our local shopping centre, the Northcote Plaza. Unfortunately, she wasn’t feeling too happy during the day :(. I tried my best to comfort her and make her feel loved, and I think I did a good job. I’m sure she appreciates what I do for her, as she does the same for me! We’re both pretty amazing :D. […]

Week 27 – Happy New Year!

Daniel got a haircut!

This week was pretty good. I had Monday and Tuesday off work (public holidays for Christmas and Boxing Day), and also took a day of annual leave on Wednesday. So I actually only worked for two days in the week, and ended up finishing work early on Friday. This meant I had heaps of time to spend with Ciera! It was awesomely amazing, definitely a great change from the day-to-day work I have to do. I love Ciera, and spending time with her! <3

On Monday, Ciera, my mum, two of my uncles and I all went to Costco. Costco’s been around for quite a while in the USA, but only recently opened in Australia (about  a year ago). There was some pretty good stuff there. We ended up buying a game for our Nintendo Wii (Epic Mickey) as it was only $50 at Costco (compared to $70-80 at other stores!). Ciera’s been playing the game quite a lot, and seems to be enjoying it. A few weeks earlier, she bought me New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which we’ve also been playing quite a lot. It’s a great fun game!

On Tuesday, Ciera suggested that we buy a board game. We took a look around a few stores at Northland (like K-Mart, Target and Toys R Us) and ended up buying a version of Monopoly – The “Here and Now – The World Edition”  version. It was a limited edition and was cheaper than most of the other versions of Monopoly. […]

Week 25 – Nearly Christmas!

Ciera after her hair being dyed.

This week was quite good. Ciera and I had a lot going on. On Monday, Ciera had two shifts at work, which was pretty draining for her :P. Since it’s nearly Christmas, Ciera doesn’t have any shifts at work for two weeks, and I have a few days off. More time together, woot!

On Thursday, I had to do a presentation about my work placement, to my manager at work, as well as the supervisor for the placement (a person from my university). I was very worried, but I think it went alright. I’m always really scared of presentations; I hate them heaps. I guess I just dislike presenting stuff, and public speaking. In any case, my manager said it went very well, so I’m quite happy about that. Now I just need to worry about writing the final report!

On Friday, Ciera had her last shift for the year. Since she was working until 7 PM, I told her that I’d go straight from work to home, and meet her there. However, I didn’t actually do that, and surprised her at work instead. Bought her a delicious blueberry muffin too. She was very surprised and I’m sure she appreciated it. Seriously, when you have a blueberry muffin, what could possibly go wrong?! It makes life more awesome. […]

Week 23 together!

Being awesome waiting for a bus.

This week has been pretty amazing, much like all the other weeks. The only bad thing was that Ciera was feeling sick for most of the week :(. This post will be pretty short, I’ve got heaps to do so don’t have much time to write up a blog post :(

On Monday, Ciera had work during the day. She came into the city early so I got to see her both during lunch, and after I finished work, which was pretty awesome :). On Wednesday, it was deployment day at work again, so I had to be there at 7am.  This meant I finished early, so I got to see Ciera earlier than normal, and spend more time with her!

On Saturday, we both went Christmas shopping together. We didn’t buy too much, it was more to take a look around and see if we could find any awesome things.  Ciera found some pretty cheap and good clothes at K-Mart so she bought them for herself. On Sunday, we did similar things, except I knew what Ciera wanted! She wanted a bike, so we went to K-Mart and got one. Luckily I bumped into my dad at K-Mart, so he was able to give us a lift home (otherwise we would have had to carry a big box on public transport!). We nearly finished assembling the bike but then realised we need a bigger wrench to finish it off. We did buy tools, but only a small wrench. So Ciera’s going to buy a large wrench tomorrow so we can finish putting it all together.

Until next time,
— Daniel

Week 21 together!

Us being cute :)

21 weeks together! Such an amazing milestone for both of us :).  I don’t have much to tell for this week, as I can’t remember a lot of what happened because I was sick for a lot of it :(

I was feeling a bit sick this week, which was bad :(. I was meant to go in to work early on Wednesday, but I slept in through my alarm, only to be woken by a text from my team leader asking where I was. I still felt bad, but replied saying I slept in due to feeling sick and would go in anyways. I ended up getting to work a little earlier than I normally would. I got worse during the day, so went home a bit early, and stayed home the next day (Thursday).

On Saturday, Ciera wanted to go to a rally in the city, promoting marriage equality for gay couples. We were going to go into the city anyways so we went. It was pretty fun – Some good speakers at the rally, and it was fun walking down the street in a large crowd xD. We also went to get the Toy Story 1+2+3 collection on DVD. A store called Big W advertised it for $34ish, but they didn’t have any in stock. We took their catalogue and went to another store called JB Hi-Fi to try and get them to match the price Big W had the DVD at. They said the ad was actually a mistake by Big W and they can’t match it (which seems to be true, from the Google searching I did afterwards). We ended up buying the DVD from JB Hi-Fi even if it was more expensive. Now we finally have the entire Toy Story collection on DVD :D. I guess we should get a Blu-Ray player one day too, huh? 😛

Today (Sunday) was Joshua’s First Communion, which is a Catholic… thingy. He had a mass at 9 AM and a party at 3 PM. I didn’t go to the mass because I was doing some awesome stuff (otherwise known as sleeping), but I did go to the party. There was a lot of people there, mainly relatives and other family friends. Some nice food too. It was alright :)

Until next week,
— Daniel

Week 19 – Two year anniversary!!

The teddy Ciera got as a two year anniversary present!

Another incredible week in the lives of Daniel and Ciera! This week was quite special for us, since it was our two year anniversary :D! On Monday, Ciera wanted to make some delicious cake, so after work, we both went together to the supermarket and bought some delicious chocolate cake mix. We also got some carbonara pasta sauce and some ravioli to go with it (can you tell that we love our Italian food? Haha :D). Pasta is delicious. Tuesday was the Melbourne Cup, so we both had a day off. I’m not entirely sure why the Melbourne Cup is a public holiday since it’s pretty much just a horse race, but whatever. It’s a holiday, so I’m not complaining 😀

On Thursday, I started work early again (as I’ve mentioned in the past). Normally the early days are Wednesdays, but since Tuesday was a public holiday, the early day got moved to Thursday. In any case, this meant getting up really early, and finishing work earlier than normal. I was going to meet Ciera after work in the city, but she had to bring Louie (our cat) to the vet for another immunisation at the same time as I finished work. So, we ended up just meeting at home. It was still great to get home early and get a little bit of extra time with Ciera (since she’s so amazing!) :).

Friday was our special day, our two year anniversary! […]
